Batophobia, or the fear of heights, may be dehabilitating to some. A person suffering may find themselves unable to accept a position on the twenty-third floor of a building. Worse, their condition may worsen into a case of severe anxiety. One extreme remedy for batophobia has been suggested as skydiving. Skydiving has been found to be a great challenge to not only rid one of fears of things such as flying or heights, but of other more pressing live challenges as well.
As an aid to get over heights, skydiving is the most assertive and arguably the most effective way to confront the fear. A typical jump is around 12,500 feet and even those without a fear of heights may find this intimidating. However, despite the height, coping with it and taking the challenge head-on is part of the process to overcome a fear of heights. In fact, most people who have a fear of heights find their anxiety goes away at that height. Some say this is because of “collective unconsciousness,” while others believe that the sheer height is incomprehensible to people to register it as a threat. Either way, experiencing extreme calm at an incredible height will be sure to help even the most severe case of Batophobia.
Stepping up to one’s fear, while intimidating, can be exhilarating and often helps people take on other life challenges. Many people also find that the rigorous training is awarding. Given the stakes at hand, these people find a better sense of discipline and find a love for it. Even those who do a tandem jump and rely on their partner find themselves concentrating. Long after the jump, most people retain the information that they learn in these classes. And of course, the emotional victory in conquering one’s fear is definitely a boost in confidence. Because of these many reasons, sky diving has quickly become a favorite tool to overcome fear. Never has a tool been more exhilarating!
