The History of the Parachute: From Flight to Sport

Image via Wikipedia
The parachute has had a long and rich history, dating back to the Renaissance era.  The earliest renditions of parachutes date back to the great Leonardo Da Vinci.  Da Vinci had made preliminary sketches of this modern marvel, the parachute, and throughout history, many engineers, inventors and scientists attempted to improve on the concept.  It was not until the 18th Century that the modern parachute was invented by Louis-Sébastien Lenormand.  It was an instant hit.  Many further exhibitors showed the parachute’s practical use from hot air balloons and other aircrafts.  Each time, its effectiveness convinced more and more and led to its use in military operations by the Twentieth Century.
Its military introduction in the air force was not for pilots of planes but of hot air balloons.  However, it was not a requirement for these men and often were found short parachutes.  The Germans, however, by 1918, were the first military to issue parachutes as standard procedure.  These parachutes were often round type parachutes as they were earlier and were bulky and slow.  They were used simply to glide a paratrooper down to the ground and had sort of a “jellyfish” look to them.  Today, most parachutes used evolved from this round parachute.  Today, most parachute companies use a ram-air parachute.  The ram-air parachute is wider and flatter and also allows the paratrooper to have a little more control and also a smoother ride down to terra firma.  One thing’s for certain.  It’s not your grandpa’s parachute!
The new, comfortable style is also met with a modern method of deployment that gives today’s skydiving experience its reputation as a safe and comfortable recreational activity.  The ripcord deployment system is used to trigger pins to release the container, allowing the chute to deploy.  On top of the original ripcord, these cords are often equipped with a back-up system to deploy should the original not work.  Ultimately, modern skydiving entails so much insurance, which explains its excellent safety record across the industry.  And with a history that ties itself to Leonardo Da Vinci, it’s clear to see why!

Motivating Methods to Staying Fit!

A senior citizen in trying to slow down his pr...
Image via Wikipedia

The hardest part when trying to start a more active lifestyle is keeping it going through all the excuses! Whether it’s because work has got you busy or tired, or it’s just too cold for that morning run, here are some tips to stay vigilant throughout the year!

Find your Motivation and Stick to it!
Why are you trying to be fit? The answer to that question could keep you going! If it’s for health reasons, try to envision what the worst. Look on-line at the diseases caused by obesity and less active lifestyle. Understand that you’re trying to avoid those and a long, happy life! And perhaps it’s so that you can enjoy your life more. Spend time with loved ones and realize that it’s because of them that you’re working so hard. Fitness can become a priority up there with family because it’s for your family that you need to stay fit!

Visualize, then Execute!
Working out at the end of the day? Keep it in the back of your mind all day. As you make your phone calls, think about how good it will feel to let off some steam. If your back hurts from your chair, think how great it will feel later with some stretching and yoga! Meet each headache of the day with a positive aspect of your workout! This will make you look forward to it and will turn it around from being a chore.

Likewise, if you’re the type of person who works out in the morning, think about your routine as you hit the hay! Visualize going through the routine. Visualize the morning sun rising as you do your routine! Falling asleep while you count your reps or run through your laps will make it harder to roll over in the morning. Make your morning routine part of your nightly exercise and you’ll be more certain to do them in the morning.

With your priorities straight and your eyes on the prize, nothing is impossible!

Fit is Cool: A Introduction to Hipster Health Crazes

Mixed organic bean sprouts

When you think of a hipster, more often than not you are picturing a tall, lanky guy or girl garbed in all the latest fashion.  But how do hipsters stay so skinny and tall?  Why, lifestyle, of course!  Of course, speaking generally, the truly healthy hipster has an entire life dedicated to keeping in shape while being good to the Earth and their wallet.
Eating Organic/Vegetarian
In most recent years, there has been a strong movement toward organic food.  In line with many reports espousing the benefits of raw foods, the organic movement has been a hipster fad as well.  The benefit is two fold: 1) Less chemicals means less unwanted side effects down the line; and 2) the food just tastes better!  Vegetarianism has grown in popularity as well.  With an increase in hormones in everyday meats, and the continual cruel treatment of animals, many have found that avoiding meat is a better way of going about the world. Furthermore, the health benefits are plentiful, from less risk of heart disease to losing weight.  If you do consider doing so as well, be sure to consult a physician and be sure to replace the nutrients and protein that you will surely lack by not eating meat.
Hipster Workouts!
A lifestyle integrated with cool activities keeps hipsters – and can keep you – in shape all season long.  Biking has grown in popularity in recent years.  With oil prices through the roof and electric cars still but a dream, bicycles have become urban survival tools.  Accordingly, many cities have grown to accommodate bikers on their streets by providing bike lanes.  Take advantage of this growing trend and ride the drive to work!  Or if it’s too far to do the whole thing, try taking a portion of it.  Or bike within your neighborhood or community to the corner store.  In addition to biking, kickball and bocce ball have become incredibly popular.  Games like these, or horseshoes, for instance, are fun and lightly active enough to generate some energy.  Moreover, they’re great for social gatherings and provide fun into the evening.

Bucket Lists: Not just a “To Do” List

Image via Wikipedia

More and more, people are becoming familiar with the term “buck list.” For those who don’t, a bucket list is a list of things that you would like to do before you die, or before you “kick the bucket.” Here’s a list of popular things people put on their bucket list:

• Skydiving
• Run a marathon
• Travel to Europe
• Climb a mountain
• Start a business
• Fall in Love

While the above is not a comprehensive list, it’s certainly some of the more popular goals people have in life. Often however, a bucket list can be more than aspirations that you may or may not achieve. Rather, why aren’t these things being accomplished now? Money? Make money. Time? Make time. The bucket list may reveal some truly hidden desires whose accomplishment is stopped only by you!

The bucket list can help you take stock on your present life by looking into why you haven’t accomplished these things. Perhaps they’re not being accomplished because you’re working too hard. When something such as “spending more time with family” is on your bucket list, which can be very eye-opening. Remember, your bucket list comprises not only of things that will make you happy when you are dead, but also when you are alive!

Take skydiving, instance. Skydiving is fun and entertaining hobby for thousands of people for many years. However, think to yourself what’s stopping you. If it’s money or time, that’s covered. If it’s fear, then what could be a more perfect way to conquer fear than with a death-defying (yet perfectly safe!) recreational activity like skydiving? The point is, don’t just make the bucket list and throw it away, or tuck it away when you’re old and gray! Take charge of it, and see how it reflects on your life now. You might find that with your head in the skies, you might see where your feet are taking you just a little better.

Use Online Sportsbooks to Place Your Bets

The Olympic Flag flying in Victoria, British C...
Image via Wikipedia

Since the Olympic games began, people have been placing wagers on the outcome of sporting events. In Ancient Roman times, people may have wagered a herd of sheep in order to get favorable odds on a gladiator. As the sporting industry continued to evolve, so did the gambling associated with the contests. Mercenary enforcers gave way to mafia bookies as time passed. For a while, some cultures frowned upon gambling, further forcing sports fans to turn to under-the-table organizations in order to make a buck or two betting on a favorite or a dark horse.

Today, gambling carries much less of a stigma for many individuals. More people view it as a source of entertainment. Part of this shift may be due to online sportsbooks and gambling institutions. You don’t have to go down a dark alley, knock on a door, and wait for a small window to open up with a squinty eyed fellow glaring through it in order to place a bet. You don’t have to wonder about how much a bookie wrote down on his notepad when you placed your bet.

Instead, you can log in to sportsbooks and place your bet. Companies that offer odds on sporting events also provide you with a variety of information to help you make informed decisions. After all, if you’re going to put your hard-earned money on the line, you should be as informed as possible. By reviewing statistics for players and listening to pre-season commentators, you can make an educated guess on who will win. You’ll also want to keep tabs on injured players. When a team loses a star player due to injury, it can decrease the team’s chances of winning. Of course, this could be an opportunity if you like to bet on the underdog. You may get a better spread when this happens.

Fuel the Fire: The Best Food for Athletes

Food plays a crucial role in everyday life. That’s why it’s even more important to have a diet that works for you instead of against you. When you are trying to fit sports or other activities into your already busy schedule, it’s even more important! Here are a few tips to help you feed yourself enough energy to last all day and then some:

Eat Light, Eat a Lot
Typically, most people eat three meals a day. Doing this may give your body the nutrients it needs; however, for more energy, most athletes eat in a different manner. Instead, trying smaller portions every two to three hours may increase energy to your day. Also, since your day is longer now with more activities, this kind of eating schedule will keep your body fed through the times when you need it most. In addition, try eating more complex carbohydrates, such as oatmeal. A great meal for athletes is a cup of oats mixed with nuts.

Great Foods for the Body
The hardest part about eating many small meals is keeping the menu tasty and nutritious. It’s easy to get bored with chicken breast for every meal. Having a variety is the best way to keep both body and tongue happy. Here are a variety of different foods to have on hand:

• Blueberries
• Yogurt
• Raw Almonds
• Black Bean Salad
• Bananas
• Hard-boiled Eggs

These are just a few examples of foods that are high in protein, energy and other things needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Keep Your Goals in Mind
Are you looking to gain weight? Or are you looking to lose weight? Consult a physician when making these choices; however, a crucial part in reaching these goals will be your diet. Continue to speak with your physician and get their advice on how you should be eating. Keep common sense handy when making everyday food choices. As always, enjoy yourself as you become a fitter and more fun you!

How to Choose an LSAT Prep Course

Taking the LSAT is serious business. Passing the test can mean the difference between getting into the school you’re interested in or being rejected. It can also make a difference as to whether you’re able to pursue the career you really want. With that in mind, taking a prep course is often a good idea. Not everyone does this, but it can give you a lot better chance of passing the LSAT, and of getting a higher score than you would’ve been able to attain otherwise. You can study on your own, but a prep course keeps you more disciplined and may address areas of the test you wouldn’t have focused on.

When you start looking for options and you’re trying to decide which LSAT prep course will be the right one for you, there are several different things that matter. The cost is an issue for some people, so pay attention to the price that’s being requested for the course. That doesn’t mean you should pick the lowest cost prep course, though. You often get what you pay for, at least to some extent. Don’t automatically choose the lowest or highest price for your prep course. Take into account what you’re getting for the money, so you can get the best deal and the best value.

If you aren’t sure what you’ll be getting or the costs or lessons aren’t spelled out, ask questions. If you don’t get satisfactory answers, look for a different prep course. Because the LSAT is such an important test, you want to be fully prepared for it. You don’t want to waste your money on something that won’t teach you what you need to know. If you do that, you won’t be prepared for the test and you’ll be out money that could have been better spent.

Silver Investments for Your Silver Anniversary

You remembered your anniversary! Congratulations. Now you just have to pick out the perfect gift. You may be able to find Silverinspiration from the tradition of buying gifts made from a specific material associated with how many years you’ve been married. You could start a gift-giving tradition in your own marriage that couples have followed for centuries.

For the first five years of your marriage, be creative with these symbolic materials. On the first anniversary, it’s typical to give the gift of paper. With this prompt, you could give anything from scrapbooking paper and personalized stationary to gift certificates to favorite stores. The second anniversary calls for a cotton-themed gift. This might be the right time to trade in some of those towels you got for your wedding for something more plush and tasteful. But what will you do on your third anniversary, when tradition calls for leather? A new wallet or purse, or perhaps a leather jacket are in order. Your gift of flowers on the fourth anniversary probably won’t last as long, but the new kitchen table you pick out to fulfill the call for wood on the fifth anniversary could be with you a long time.

The metal anniversaries are perhaps the most famous. Tin starts a couple off on the tenth anniversary, but don’t worry, it gets more glamorous than that. Fifteen years later you’ll come up on your silver wedding anniversary. Jewelry is a typical choice for the 25th anniversary, and perhaps you still have some of grandma’s heirloom silver to gift. But since retirement is looming ever nearer, it might be more practical to give silver. If you make it to your golden anniversary (which marks fifty years of marriage) or even your diamond anniversary (sixty years) they’ll at least be worth enough to help you pay for anniversary presents!

Buying Sports Memorabilia? Consider Payday Loans

Sports Memorabilia, Bar in Left Field, Hunting...

For true sports fans, there are few things better than memorabilia. Signed baseballs, autographed pictures, and similar things are highly coveted pieces that are difficult to get and can cost a lot of money. Sometimes, a piece appears on the market that’s perfect for your collection but it happens when you’re strapped for cash. If you can’t borrow from family or friends and you don’t have any savings to dip into, you can always see about payday loans. No matter how you choose to fund your purchase, you don’t want to let an important piece of sports history get away from you.

Some items only seem to come around once in a blue moon. These are the most rare and collectible, and they are the items that cost the most. For a true collector, though, the cost is not the issue. What matters most is whether the piece has emotional value for the collection. Eventually it may be re-sold, but that’s not what the collector is thinking when he buys it. If he were purchasing things for resale, he’d be a dealer, instead. Some collectors are also dealers, though. It just depends on the person and what he or she likes when it comes to sports memorabilia.

Whether there’s money to be made also matters, but a true collector won’t sell something just because he can make money. He’d rather keep the item and treasure it. A lot of sports memorabilia collections get started when a kid catches a baseball at a game and gets it autographed. They grow from there. Other collections start because of a passion for a particular sports team. It can be easy to start collecting things that relate to that team just because of the enjoyment of it, and being a fan turns into being a collector over time.
